Alltask was commissioned by DBR to undertake a highly challenging scaffolding project at the Natural History Museum. The project involved the installation of two rolling access birdcages to facilitate the repair and cleaning of the museum’s iconic terracotta facade.
Installation: Erect two rolling access birdcages for terracotta repairs and cleaning.
Complex Design: A design was created to accommodate the museum’s architectural intricacies. The building is listed, therefore no intrusive anchors to the building facade were permitted. The museum also remained open for the duration of the project, meaning lip/box ties through windows were not permitted.
Professional Execution: We delivered the project within timelines and quality standards.
The Natural History Museum’s facade presented unique challenges:
• Accommodating the intricate details of the terracotta facade.
• Ensuring the scaffold was mobile yet stable and secure. The Natural History Museum is recognised for its architectural beauty. Our access solution had to limit the amount of scaffold in situ at any one time. As a typical facade scaffold would prevent large parts of the existing building from being fully displayed, Alltask proposed a phased approach. The scaffold access provides access to one-third of the elevation at a time and can be rolled into position safely and quickly to prevent programme delays
• Minimising disruptions to the museum’s daily operations and visitor experience.
The project required a highly complex scaffold design by our Senior Scaffold Design Engineer Liam Shearer. The design was planned to ensure both stability and mobility, allowing the birdcages to roll along the facade for comprehensive access to all areas needing repair and cleaning.
