Huntingdon Compressor Station has undergone a significant upgrade, focusing on noise reduction and vibration control. The project involved installing Armacell Acoustic Class C 5-Layer System on Units D & E to ensure plant operations while maintaining safety standards.

Project Overview
• The insulation system was critical in reducing noise and vibration, as traditional enclosures were not feasible due to the gas-filled pipework.
• This project demanded precise fabrication of multiple layers with zero tolerance, requiring bespoke pattern cutting and meticulous installation.
• Adverse weather conditions further complicated the process. Our solution involved erecting the 40ft scaffold span off-site in the Rebel Marine’s boatyard.
Project Specifications
This project marked the first use of the applied system in the UK, establishing a milestone in gas compressor insulation. The technical complexity of the project was underscored by the mathematical precision required in pattern generation, which ensured seamless application. Given that the site was a live gas compressor station, specific training certifications, including SCO 91 and EUSR cards, were necessary for access and work permits, adding another layer of operational complexity.
Execution & Solutions
Custom fabrication was essential, with each insulation layer carefully designed and applied to meet the specifications with precision. Temporary habitats were created to maintain necessary humidity and temperature conditions for the insulation material. Effective logistics ensured smooth delivery and installation despite working in a high-risk, 24/7 operational environment.

The Huntingdon and Peterborough Compressor Station upgrades represent the most extensive investment in the UK gas network to date, making this the largest capital project in the sector’s history. These stations play a crucial role in maintaining a consistent and uninterrupted gas flow, supplying energy to London and the Southeast. The project successfully integrated advanced insulation technology to enhance operational safety and reduce environmental impact.
This project demonstrated the successful integration of cutting-edge insulation solutions within a high-risk energy sector. Through precise planning and execution, we managed to apply a pioneering system in a complex environment. The success of this initiative sets a precedent for similar upgrades across the gas transmission network, ensuring safer and more efficient operations.

Through strategic planning, technical expertise, and collaboration, the Huntingdon Compressor Station upgrade highlights advancements in industrial insulation and noise reduction, contributing to a more reliable and sustainable energy network.
