Critical safety maintenance works to the A40 Westway Flyover at Shepherd’s Bush posed unique challenges for Alltask. We worked with UK System Scaffold Hire Ltd (UKSSH) and Prime Scaffold and Structural Designs Ltd (PSD) to deliver innovative solutions that provided a compelling case study in engineering and design.
Working for our client FM Conway, the first phase of the project involved building a Haki birdcage within the grounds of Imperial College London to provide stability and support for the foundational aspects of the project, ensuring safety and efficiency during construction.
The Haki system scaffold was then used to build suspended access over the car park at Imperial College, allowing it to continue being used by the College throughout the duration of the works.
The completion of the scaffolding for the project will involve building suspended access over two Network Rail Lines - where the proximity of the scaffold to the active railway will present a unique set of challenges, with only approximately 500mm of clearance at the closest point to the trains - and a further bridged birdcage spanning a service road to an industrial site.
We were required to liaise closely with Imperial College, which remained operational throughout, to ensure minimal impact on their day-to-day operations. To help achieve this Alltask adhered to a strict vehicle logging system and set delivery slots.
The suspended scaffold was constructed using Haki System Scaffold and we adopted their erect ahead method, a pioneering creeping hanging style that allows for the erection of the scaffold while incorporating shear ties strategically installed to the underside of the underpass — an essential consideration for maintaining structural integrity and safety in a dynamic environment.
While we have a well-established and valued relationship with Haki, this project was the first time this division of Alltask had used Haki for suspended scaffold—but we are certain it won’t be the last.
It was a great collaboration with UKSSH and PSD on this project —their Haki scaffold expertise and support were key to our success.
This project is a great example of teamwork that led to a successful outcome.
The redevelopment of Manbre Wharf is an example of Alltask’s ability to handle complex projects with precision and expertise. By providing innovative access solutions and maintaining the highest standards of work, Alltask has played a crucial role in transforming this site into a cutting-edge workspace that will serve the community for years to come.
